How to Winterize Your Home

Though it may not seem like it, cooler temperatures are just around the corner. We may only be a few weeks into the fall season, but it’s never too soon to start planning ahead for Old Man Winter. Royal Windows and More is here to help you and your family prepare for those winter days. Our team of experts prepared a list of tips on winterizing your home and how Royal Windows can help.

While this may sound obvious, be sure to lock your windows. Locking them can ensure they are tightly shut and sealed. However, that tight seal might not be enough. If you find that isn’t doing the trick, you might want to look into applying a sealant, caulk, or weatherstripping to them. Having one or all of those products properly applied and placed around the perimeter of your windows can help to make certain they aren’t a source of a draft. Doing so will help to create protection from air leaking out and seeping into your home.

The best way to tell if the source of a draft is coming from your front door is to close it and run your hand along the edges to see if you can feel any cold air. If so, it’s time to replace your weatherstripping here, as well. Additionally, your sweep may need to be replaced. This is the weatherstripping that goes on the threshold your home where the door closes. Proper application of weatherstripping ensures that the cold air is staying outside where it belongs.

If you’re lucky enough to have a chimney and fireplace in your home, be sure this space is properly prepped for the winter months, too. Be sure to clean your fireplace prior to using it for the first time. You’ll want to inspect and remove any soot to prevent a fire hazard. Also, be sure to check for any pests that may have made their way into your home.

Here at Royal Windows & More, we can help with winterizing. We carry various type of windows that we can install to get and keep your house ready for cooler temps. Our EnergyGuard Program is designed to save you money, while reducing the loss of energy in your home. Energy efficient windows will make all the difference and you’ll wonder why you waited this long to switch. We can even test and see where your air is leaking, and seal those points to keep the warmth in, and the cold out.

Even simply replacing your windows is a great place to start. Doing so ensures your windows are sealed properly and are performing optimally. With the weather change, old windows could cause more damage than you think. Replacing your cracked, drafty windows is sure to save you time and money down the road from damage that might not be a big problem for now, but has the potential to turn into a big problem if not replaced soon.

Hopefully these winterizing suggestions help get your home in tip-top shape for the cool days of winter. Many of these tips can help with a quick fix, but may not be a long-term solution. That’s where the pros at Royal Windows and More come in. Let our team take care of you to ensure your home is winterized and ready to battle the elements.
