Vinyl siding is an extremely popular choice for homeowners who want to improve the looks of their home without painting. Many homeowners like vinyl because its relatively inexpensive, long-lasting, and easy to maintain. Vinyl comes in a variety of grains, thickness and colors making it a practical choice for many homeowners.

One of the main reasons homeowners want to install vinyl siding is because it is long lasting and durable. Most vinyl siding companies offer siding that should last for a very long time. Vinyl siding can stand up to most weather conditions without worry of severe damage. Newer vinyl is even stronger than the older versions and is less likely to crack and become brittle. In addition, vinyl siding can withstand years of sunlight without fading.

Vinyl siding is easy to maintain. There is no need to ever paint it and it never fades from the elements. The only regular maintenance vinyl siding needs is to be spray washed once or twice a year. Local realtors say, vinyl siding is a great investment that attracts home buyers to a home.

Replacement windows are often touted as a great way to improve the energy efficiency of your home and save you money over time. While that’s certainly true, greening your eco footprint is far from all they can do for you and your wallet. Here are three other ways new windows give you more than your money’s worth:

1. Windows can add pizzazz to your home, making it more attractive and light-filled for you and future buyers. Installing a single stained glass window in a living space can serve as a beautiful focal point; playing up the period or style of your home with your windows adds character that sets it apart from the neighbors’ homes.

2. Your home is your sanctuary. Use windows to add privacy, while adding light where you want it. Frosted and ribbed glass panes are wonderful options for bathrooms, closet doors, or windows where you’d rather not see the view outside. Glass block can serve a similar function, adding light while obscuring that which you’d rather not see — or those whom you’d rather not allow to see in.

3. Silence outside noise with windows. High-tech laminated windows reduce sounds from nearby roads — or the neighbors’ barking dogs — as well as protect furniture and carpets from the effects of bright sunshine, which fade from UV exposure over time. Good luck, and remember windows are a great investment that will give you a large (ROI) return on investment.

Saving money on your energy bills starts in your laundry room.

Stop wasting water and energy on small loads of clothes. Wash smart, which means only wash full loads of clothes. Use cold water whenever possible, and this will save you 2 to 4 % on your energy costs. You’ll also spend less time doing laundry! Plus, none of your clothes will shrink or get faded. Many people think they have to use warm or hot water to get rid of tough stains. You don’t! Think about it this way. Every time you turn the water temperature dial on your washing machine to warm, you might as well start writing a check to the energy company. When you wash full loads of clothes in cold water, you will save a lot of money on your energy bill. This avoids the extra electricity or natural gas expense of water heating altogether.

Because so many people are looking for ways to save on their energy bills, a slew of cold water detergents designed to enhance the effectiveness of cold water washing in both traditional and high-efficiency machines, are now available. Experts say, cold water washing has many benefits. It lengthens the life of garments and lowers electric bills.

Keep in mind that powdered detergent has a harder time dissolving in cold water. If you have noticed this problem, switch to a liquid.

Another water and energy saving idea is to set the temperature on your water heater to 120 degrees and this easy switch will save you up to 10 percent on your water heating costs. Setting the thermostat to a lower temperature reduces the heat, (energy) required to keep the water hot. At 120 degrees you shouldn’t notice a difference in the heat of your hot water, but you will notice a difference in your electricity bill.

Are you thinking about having vinyl siding installed on your house? Home improvement experts say, go for it. Even in this less than perfect real estate market, new, vinyl siding is a good investment.

Replacing your current siding with new vinyl siding will net you 72 percent of the job cost, according to Remodeling magazine’s Cost Vs. Value Report. If your current siding is in serious disrepair, you may be unable to sell your home unless you tackle the job.

Curb appeal can make or break a sale in any market. Vinyl siding with foam backing is an upgrade from standard vinyl siding and offers better insulation. Though the material costs more, insulated vinyl siding improves the R-value value of your home, thereby reducing heating and cooling costs. The siding reduces outdoor noises and withstands heavy winds.

This exterior material looks like real wood and offers durable protection against moisture, wind, fire, bugs and more. With an 80 percent return on investment, fiber cement siding represents one of the shrewdest improvements you can make. Only two projects have more bang for the buck: replacing the garage door and replacing the entry door. Local realtors say, new vinyl siding adds instant curb appeal and home buyers are quick to notice it!

Many say new windows are a great way to save on your energy bills while also transforming the look of your home. Realtors say the curb appeal that new windows offer can actually help bring people into your home. Once you start researching new windows you will learn all about vinyl.

Windows made from vinyl are strong and provide very good energy savings having moderate to high R-values meaning that they are resistant to heat flow. The higher the R-value, the greater the resistance and the higher their energy efficiency which in the long run will save you in heating and cooling costs.

Vinyl Windows are one of the least expensive choices and they come in a wide range of prices. There really is a product available for every budget. In addition, you can choose from many different colors, which is actually part of the vinyl which makes them essentially scratch resistant.

They can be easily customized and are available in a wide range of styles, shapes and sizes. Another benefit is that they never need to be scraped, painted, or stained. They are also almost 100% scratch free. Your windows whatever their age, will always look great!

Local realtors say as the current housing market continues to be sluggish, many are not bothering to put their homes on the market. Instead, homeowners are staying put and making updates to their homes. A big trend is to add more living space outdoors.

To do this, many are sprucing up their backyards with new patio’s and decks. Of course, that means new patio furniture! The goal for many homeowners is to transform their backyards so it feels like they‘re on vacation all year round!

Furniture designers say, the biggest trend in patio furniture is the porch rocker. A painted wood rocking chair can sit on your front porch in the summer and fall!

This season, color and pattern have as much impact outdoors as they do indoors. Color in outdoor furnishings is increasingly bolder and vibrant. Colors that you use inside your home or in your apparel are finding their way outside. Pastel blues, turquoise, brown, fresh yellows and greens, as well as black and white are used to make outdoor furnishings more attractive. Patterns show a lot of variety, too. Polka dots, bold paisleys and stripes are all present, as well as solids. Local realtors say more families are saving money and not taking vacations. So why not transform your backyard and go on a “staycation?”

If you are thinking about replacing that front window in your living room, why not make it fabulous? A bow or bay window is a great solution because you can get fabulous at a lower cost.

No matter what type of window, bow or bay, you install in place of the old picture window, it will be more efficient and reduce your utility bills. This can help to pay back its initial cost. You should be able to recover most of the cost because it will increase your home’s resale value.

The basic difference between a bow and a bay window is that a bow window is made of four or more windows. Five windows is a common configuration. Having more windows creates a more circular appearance that many people find attractive.

Bay windows are made from just three windows. The two angled side windows usually can be opened and are angled at 30 degrees or 45 degrees. The fixed center window is similar to a smaller picture window. A 45-degree bay window extends out further from the house wall and provides more space for plants or a bench seat.

There is not a significant difference in the energy efficiency or durability of a bow or bay window. Choose Energy Star windows and you can’t go wrong. Soon, you will save so much money, your windows will have paid for themselves!

Understanding how energy efficient windows work is the first step in saving money. Doors and windows are major culprits in your home’s energy losses year-round. Installing weather stripping around doors and windows is a good start, but if your energy bills seem unreasonably high, more serious insulation may be needed. New doors and windows can save energy and add to your home’s curb appeal.

If water leaks through window frames, or condensation forms, your windows are not airtight. Moisture also creates mold that may negatively impact your health while rotting away window frames and walls. To make matters worse, condensation obscures the view from your windows.

Energy Star rated windows are energy efficient windows that come in dozens of combinations of frame materials, sealed panes, and coatings.

Frame materials: Conductivity of window frame materials from lowest to highest is: fiberglass, insulated vinyl, clad wood, wood, and aluminum. Yet aluminum, which is very strong, can be ENERGY STAR-rated if it’s insulated and has a thermal break material between pane and frame.

Window Panes: Air sealed between panes works well in mild climates. Inert gases are heavier than air and insulate better. Triple-pane fiberglass windows with inert gas are the ultimate in energy efficient windows.

Coatings: Microscopically thin metallic coatings inside sealed panes enhance the low emittance (Low-E) of energy. There are also coatings for impact and sound reduction.

Bottom line is that in order to save energy, you need to choose a quality window company, with many years of experience. It’s also crucial to only choose Energy Star windows.

Many homeowners like the look of siding but are not 100% sure they want to have it installed on their homes. Here are four good reasons why siding is a good investment.

Changes the appearance. Siding really spruces up a home and gives it a clean look.

Increases future resale value. New siding offers a benefit to home buyers because it extends the life of an exterior.

Lowers utility bills. Adding insulation under siding provides a moisture barrier and prevents outside temperatures from disturbing the balance of interior climates.

Decreases maintenance costs. The life expectancy of a new paint job is at least five years, and quality paints are touted by manufacturers to last 10 to 20 years. New siding requires little, if any, maintenance.
