5 Simple New Year’s Resolutions For Your Home

Have you been thinking about New Year’s resolutions for 2020? Every year many people strive to eat better, save money, or hit the gym in the New Year. But, what about your home? There’s always a million different ways you can improve your home, and when the New Year rolls around it can be tempting to try too many at once. But, here at Royal Home Improvement we wanted to take a moment to share five simple New Year’s resolutions for your home. By using a few simple steps, you can increase your home’s value, save money, and give your home a brand-new feel at the same address.

  1. Fresh Coat of Paint

There is no better way to start the New Year off right than by adding a fresh coat of paint. Not only is this one of the most cost-effective ways to improve your home but will also make your home appear larger. It is generally known that light colors make a room look bigger and brighter. Light and bright walls are more reflective, making a space feel larger. While darker colors tend to absorb light and make a room look smaller. Regardless what color of paint you decide to go with, there is no denying that a fresh coat of paint can give any space a brand-new look.

  1. Restore your Shower head

Taking a hot relaxing shower can be one of life’s little pleasures. It’s a time when you can forget about the worries of the day and enjoy the rejuvenating properties of hot water on your skin. But that old shower head could be getting in the way or your perfect shower. If you have noticed the water pressure in your shower has grown weak, this may be caused by a mineral buildup in your shower head. Simply remove the shower head and soak it in a mixture of equal parts of vinegar and warm water. The acid in the vinegar will dissolve the minerals and allow water to flow freely through the shower head.

  1. Clean the Tile Grout

What’s the secret to floors, walls and counters that look brand new? Clean tile grout. Tile is beautiful, strong, and generally easy to clean, but cleaning the tile grout is a different story. Because of its light coloring, grout is likely to develop stains and discoloration over time. And with the accumulation of dirt, food particles, and mold, it’s nearly impossible to keep clean. But with a little bit of elbow grease and a little baking soda you can have your bathroom or kitchen looking like new in no time. Hot water, a small brush, and a mixture of water and baking soda is all you need to take your tile from old and dingy, to tile that looks like new. But, before you begin, remember that its always best to start off with a mild cleaning solution before moving on to harsher chemicals.

  1. Clean Out Dryer Duct

Many times, our dryers break down because they haven’t been properly maintained. On occasion we clean off a thin layer of lint from the filter but tend to forget about the vent behind the dryer. Over time dryer lint builds up inside dryer duct work and can become a major problem for your home. If you’ve noticed the dryer takes longer than normal to dry your clothes, this may be caused by lint and dust buildup inside your duct work. By cleaning your dryer vent regularly, you can remove lint buildup that improves its efficiency, saves money on your home’s energy bills, and protects your family from the potential of dangerous fires.

  1. Deep Clean your Dishwasher

Let’s be honest, when was the last time you cleaned your dishwasher? For most homeowners its probably been quite some time. Over time, soap scum, grease, and tiny bits of food can build up in the corners and crevices of your dishwasher. Causing not only your dishwasher to look and smell bad, but it also reduces the efficiency of the appliance.

How to clean your dishwasher:

  • Clean the Drain: Pull out the bottom dish rack and remove any food or grease buildup. This will increase cleaning efficiency and water drainage of the dishwasher.
  • Use Vinegar in the Dishwasher: Place a bowl of white vinegar on the top rack of the machine. Run the empty dishwasher through a hot-water cycle. This will help wash away any bits of food and eliminate any stuffy odors.
  • Rise with Baking Soda: Pour one cup of baking soda in the bottom of the dishwasher and run a small hot-water cycle. This will brighten the interior and help prevent future stains and odors from returning.
